Reasons to upgrade to 3 phase wiring

A common question for Malaysian house owners is whether 3 phase wiring is needed for their homes. Tenaga Nasional Bhd (TNB) has a guideline to decide who needs 3 phase wiring.

The information is after the jump.

  • Does your electricity bill exceed RM300 every month?
  • Do you have or plan to install more than 3 air conditioners in your premise?
  • Do you plan to renovate your premise or change the electrical wiring?

If any of the answers to the above questions is Yes, TNB advises you to change from a single phase supply to a 3 phase supply. In TNB's own words:

This is because a 3 phase electrical supply provides better
stability to support the additional electricity usage, as well as prevents over-voltage and short circuit incidences) caused by overloading.

TNB used to have a promotion for installing 3 phase wiring from 1 June 2007 to 31 May 2008. This promotion has since ended.

The current rates for 3 phase wiring are:
  • overhead cable services - RM300.
  • underground cable service (60A) - RM1,250
  • underground cable service (100A) - RM2,250

Another point to note is that domestic tariff rates are the same for both single phase supply and 3 phase supply customers. See TNB's domestic tariff rates here.
