R22 vs R410A

When looking at advertisements of inverter air conditioners (read more about inverters), one might find terms like R22 and R410A are being used. R22 and R410A are terms referring to the type of air con refrigerant. Now you must be thinking... why does the type of air con refrigerant matter?

Well, it matters whether the air conditioner uses R22 or R410A because:

  1. there is an effect on the environment
  2. and more importantly (for many of us), there is a price difference!

R22 is basically the refrigerant that is used in the majority of air conditioners manufactured over the past years.

However, manufacturers are starting to show up with newer air conditioner models using R410A.

While the price difference between a R22 and a R410A air conditioner might not be much, there is a bigger difference for installation cost. As of now, installing a R410A air conditioner costs much more. Thus, before deciding to buy an air conditioner, ask how much is the installation cost for the particular model that you plan to buy.

The blog Singapore Air Con, Salesman and Me goes on to explain more about R22 and R410A refrigerant. The article covers important points like:

  1. The Montreal Protocol. All production and selling of Hydro-chlorofluorocarbons (HCFCs), including R22 refrigerant, will be frozen in the future.
  2. Advantages of R410A over R22.
  3. Whether we should buy a R410A air conditioner now
