Tan advises against mopping timber floors with lots of water and industrial cleaners as that can dull the finish, damage the wood and leave discoloured residues.
It’s better to wipe away stains immediately with a damp, soft cloth, or use a PH-neutral cleaner if necessary. Such methods are both economical and gentle to the hands and feet, he said.
"Homeowners can be rest assured they needn’t go to great lengths in caring for their hardwood flooring," Tan said.
